Mineola High School Losing its Latin Course, a Huge Mistake

In just a few years, Mineola High School will no longer be teaching our children Latin. Mineola was just one of the few schools in the area that offered this vital and instrumental language to our students. I know it would be sadly missed by the students, especially by the Latin Club, which is the largest club in Mineola High School. I strongly oppose this and am asking anyone, especially Mineola parents to make sure that this does not happen.
Latin terminology is vital to learning the advanced academic fields, such as medicine,
law, theology and history. It strengthens ones ability to learn French , Spanish, and Italian. Oh, and by the way, Latin helps a student MAXIMIZE THEIR SAT SCORES!
When seeing new words for the first, time, they already know the roots and prefixes, also helps with Math.
I will get into the fascinating study of history in just a moment. Please read some quotes below by College Admissions, pertaining to students who have a knowledge of Latin.

“Students taking Latin are typically scholarly. They pursue academic study in the purest sense, they are not simply fulfilling a requirement.”
Matthew Potts, Admissions Counselor, University of Notre Dame

This year, I was particularly impressed by a student with average test scores and grades who had taken Latin throughout middle and high school. We ended up offering the student admission, and I think it is fair to say that it was his commitment to Latin that tipped the scales.”
Andrea Thomas, Assistant Dean of Admission, Hamilton College

“We value the study of Latin very highly, at least on par with other languages.”
Steve LeMenager, Director of Admission and Associate Dean, Princeton University

“This student is likely to be disciplined, have a strong basis for further learning, be a little more creative toward intellectual pursuits than most.”
Michael C. Behnke, Vice President for Enrollment, University of Chicago

Why is it important to study the history of Latin and Roman History?
Did you know that Democracy was an experiment in Athens? Romans adopted it and it is the basis of our government system today. They invented concrete, central heating, and did you know Romans performed the first Caesarean section under the rule of Julius Caesar? Hence the name Caesarean! “All Roads Lead to Rome” This quote at one time was actually fact.

If we, as as parents, can see the value of this on our child’s development and education, can we all save this course at Mineola High School? Our voices need to be heard on this one. Please send your disagreement with this decision to Michael Nagler (Superintendent) at Mineola Schools ***** . Go onto the Mineola Schools Website and email the Board Members on the Board of Education. Go to our Facebook Page, “Save the Latin Course at Mineola Highschool” If we don’t speak up about this, an integral part of learning, and history will be missing from the Mineola Curriculum.
